COVID-19 Vaccine Appointments: What to Expect

As eligibility for the COVID-19 vaccinations expands to more members of our community, New York State has expanded the delivery of vaccine allocations from health care systems to state and county mass vaccination sites, pharmacies and to facilities for groups like veterans and those with developmental disabilities. 

We recommend continually checking the Finger Lakes Vaccination Hub for the latest on eligibility for and availability of COVID-19 vaccination appointments in our region. We’ve also developed the tools below and will continue to provide helpful resources and information from our experts about the COVID-19 vaccines.

Who is Eligible for a Vaccination Appointment? 

Groups who are eligible for vaccinations at New York State, County Health Department and pharmacy vaccination locations include any individual who lives, works or studies in New York State who is over the age of 16.

We highly recommend that you visit the Finger Lakes Vaccine Hub website to confirm your vaccine eligibility and view available vaccination appointments at other locations throughout our region. You can also check your eligibility and availability for vaccine clinic appointments through New York State.

How Do I Provide Proof of Eligibility?

Monroe County Health Department vaccination centers and pharmacies in our region do NOT require a doctor’s note to confirm eligibility. Only an ID is required. 

Preparing for Your Vaccination Appointment

If you have a scheduled COVID-19 vaccination appointment, please arrive on time and bring the below with you:

  • A New York State Identification, or proof of identification
  • A list of your allergies
  • A mask

The vaccine will be administered into your upper arm. Please wear a loose or short-sleeved shirt. If you are unable to receive the vaccine in your arm, please let our team know when scheduling your appointment so they can recommend the appropriate location.

Will I need to bring payment?

No, you do not need to bring a form of payment to the appointment.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Currently, the state is offering both indoor and drive-thru vaccination clinics. At drive-thru locations, expect to remain in your car for the duration of your appointment.

Arrival

Upon arrival, you will speak with a medical professional who will screen you, asking you a variety of health questions to ensure that it is safe for you to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

You will be provided paperwork to fill out while you wait for your turn to receive the vaccine. Staff members will be available to assist you with the paperwork, if necessary.

Vaccine Administration

Next, a medical professional will administer the vaccine.

Right after receiving the vaccine, a staff member will help you fill out the NYS COVID-19 Vaccine Form.

Observation

After the vaccination, you’ll wait 15-30 minutes in your car or a socially distanced observation area. Medical professionals will monitor your health throughout this time to ensure you do not experience an allergic reaction or any other health concerns.

After observation, you’re free to go!

After Your Appointment

Once you have received one or both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, be sure to monitor your health for any concerns. Some side effects include:

  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Body aches or soreness

At this time, it’s still important to wear a mask, stay socially distant, and wash your hands regularly, even after you’ve had a COVID-19 vaccine.
