Earlier this month, Dr. Ryan Lydon, a vascular surgeon at Rochester General Hospital, performed the first endovascular surgery in Upstate New York to treat an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) using a newly FDA approved GORE technology. The device, called the GORE EXCLUDER Conformable AAA Endoprosthesis with ACTIVE CONTROL System, provides our exceptional Rochester Regional Health vascular surgery team with an alternative option to open surgery for patients who require an endovascular aneurysm repair.
The GORE device is comprised of a conformable stent graft, enhanced device positioning and optional angulation control. When compared to using traditional open surgical repair and endovascular approaches for abdominal aortic aneurysms, the GORE device gives physicians more control, reduces the risk for complications and significantly cuts down a patient’s hospital recovery period.
“This opens the pool of candidates who now have an option that’s minimally invasion with no incisions,” said Dr. Lydon. “Previously, these patients would have received other treatment options that in some cases led to longer recovery times and possibly more risk for complications.”
“Rochester Regional Health has continued to invest in the latest vascular surgery treatment options for its patients,” added Dr. Lydon. “Using this device and watching the patients go home the next morning, who traditionally would have been in the hospital for the better part of 1-2 weeks, is extremely rewarding.”
