POTSDAM, NY – General Surgeon Apostolos Kandilis, MD, PhD, has joined the Canton-Potsdam Hospital surgical team. His office is located in the Leroy Outpatient Center, 50 Leroy Street, Potsdam.

Dr. Kandilis earned his medical degree at the Medical School of Athens, University of Athens, Greece, which is where he also earned a PhD in Surgery studying liver regeneration following partial hepatectomy.

Before coming to the United States, Dr. Kandilis completed a general surgery residency at the University General Hospital of Athens in Greece, and two fellowships in Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation and Esophagogastric Surgery in England. He then completed fellowship training in the United States: Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery at Ascension Providence Hospital in Detroit, MI; and Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA.

Dr. Kandilis decided to continue his career as an attending surgeon in the United States, and therefore completed an additional three years of general surgery residency at Jefferson Einstein Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, in order to complete American Board of Surgery requirements.

A multitude of reasons brought Dr. Kandilis to the North Country, with the most important being his opportunity to join his wife and fellow St. Lawrence Health (SLH) general surgeon, Jillian Bartling, DO, and their two daughters.

He pointed out he is honored to be working with the SLH and Rochester Regional Health (RRH) medical teams. “By working at Canton-Potsdam Hospital, I will have the opportunity to join an excellent group of general surgeons,” Dr. Kandilis said.

He will be working to develop thoracic and hepato-pancreato-biliary surgical services at Canton-Potsdam Hospital in conjunction with the Thoracic and Surgical Oncology teams at Rochester General Hospital.

“I am looking forward to bringing new surgical services to the North Country, including helping to develop a Thoracic Surgery service line,” Dr. Kandilis said. “I will also be performing complex surgical procedures at Rochester General Hospital in collaboration with the Thoracic and Surgical Oncology teams. Our goal is to afford patients from the North Country access to complex surgical treatments for diseases such as lung, esophageal, and hepato-pancreato-biliary cancer at a larger tertiary center, while providing follow-up care and monitoring locally in Potsdam.”

At Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Dr. Kandilis will be performing open/laparoscopic/thoracoscopic/robotic procedures, including but not limited to abdominal wall hernia repairs, paraesophageal hernia repairs, anti-reflux procedures, cholecystectomies, appendectomies, small and large bowel resections, gastric resections, adrenalectomies, and splenectomies.
